Scór winners given heroes welcome home

St. Enda’s was the only Ulster team to win an All-Ireland title in Derry.

Saturday’s title was our tenth at senior Ceili dancing and we are now the leading club in Ireland at senior Scor. We have also three All-Ireland Ballad titles won in 1987, 1990 and 2008 while Caoileann McEnhill, a former member of our title winning Ballad and Ceili teams, won a Solo Singing title for the club in 2006. Most poignantly, St. Enda’s first ever All-Ireland title was won in 1973 when the late Damien Turbitt who just passed away recently, won an All-Ireland Solo dance title. Damien went on to feature on numerous St. Enda’s teams which won Tyrone, Ulster and All-Ireland titles in Ceili dancing.

With 15 senior titles in total, only the Spa Club from Kerry come close with eleven titles in total (six in Ceili and five in Sets). St. Enda’s is also the leading club in Scor na nOg.

Our new champions Paul Breen, David Tierney, Orla Byrne, Vicky O’Neill, Leanne McCullagh, Damien Friel, Faelan Duffy and Michelle Mullin deserve great credit for their workrate. Throughout their campaign the team regulary held practise sessions as early as 5.30am on several mornings and the result certainly made up for last year’s disappointment in Killarney. Orla, Paul and David  were on the 2008 team which last won the title. Damien Friel was also a member of that squad right through the Tyrone and Ulster stages but unfortunately missed the All-Ireland final due to a Riverdance tour in America.

David Tierney, the club’s Cultural Officer, now holds four All-Ireland titles, all won in 2005, 2006, 2008 and 2013.

Interestingly, St. Enda’s was the only male-female Ceili team to participate in Saturday’s finals. The other all-girl teams came from Dublin (Dochas Eireann), Leitrim (Naomh Mhuire) and Kerry (Gleann Fleisce).
