St. Enda’s 7-13, Cookstown 0-12
A power packed, dominant display was the order of the day by our u16 footballers last night as they brushed past Cookstown in the league semi final.
Damian McGuigan set the tone after all of 30 seconds with a fine opening point. Cookstown levelled before two Jack McGirr points and an opportunist goal from Eoghan McNamee put the Omagh boys five in front. Cookstown rallied to get within 3 again before points from Kevin Conway and Aidan Clarke moved Omagh back in front. A brilliant break from Ciarán Breen saw his speculative effort land in the Cookstown net and the St Enda’s boys never looked back.
Cookstown kept at it in fairness and a couple of pointed frees kept Omagh honest but some brilliant defending from Emmett McArdle, Cormac Corry and company closed every route to goal. However in the 24th minute an exhillarating run from McGuigan from his own 45 saw him cut swathes through the Fr Rocks defence to find the net again and effectively end the game as a contest. Further points from Mark McKenna and Kevin Conway finished out the half to leave the score Omagh 3-8 Cookstown 0-8 at the break.
Cookstown looked determined at the start of the second half and the first point coming less than a minute into it indicated that the game could yet be up for grabs. This was a fleeting thought as Conway rocked the Cookstown net for the 4th time. Cain Bradley chipped in with a couple of monster scores before 2 goals in a minute by Conway and Clarke heaped more misery on a dispirited Cookstown team. The Omagh management emptied the bench and Cookstown pushed for a consolation goal but Nathan McNamee and his defence were determined to keep the clean sheet and indeed it was Omagh who made it 7up with Conway notching his hat-trick.
